How It Works

The MainStreet100 Index tracks 100 representative main streets from across Canada, chosen to reflect regional geographies and communities of varying sizes. This approach enables the creation of additional subindices for different regions and community types. The index is calculated using three key datasets:

  • Footfall Data: Tracks visitor traffic through GPS cell-phone data.
  • Consumer Spending: Measures economic activity using card payment data.
  • Business Credit Ratings: Assesses business stability through financial data.

Together, these indicators provide a comprehensive view of how many people visit main streets, how much they spend, and how well businesses are performing.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Local Policymakers: Gain insights to develop data-driven economic policies.
  • Business Improvement Areas & Associations: Use evidence-based metrics to advocate for main street investment.
  • Entrepreneurs & Business Owners: Make strategic decisions with real-time market data.
  • Economic Development Agencies: Attract investment and assess the impact of initiatives.
